A Highlands County ranch known for Florida panther activity is now permanently protected from development under a $4 million conservation easement. Conservation Florida, alongside federal partners, secured the agreement to preserve the 1,003-acre AP Ranch next to the Archbold Biological Preserve. The deal protects vital wildlife habitat and migration corridors while allowing the ranch’s cattle operations to continue — keeping the land working and wild for future generations.
A domestic dispute turned violent Tuesday night when a Frostproof man allegedly forced his way into a Winter Haven home and attacked another man with a baseball bat. Polk County deputies say 43-year-old Ian Seth Sumner struck the victim multiple times, leaving him with a serious head injury. Investigators believe jealousy over a woman sparked the assault. Sumner was arrested at the scene and faces charges of Armed Burglary and Aggravated Battery. He remains in the Polk County Jail.
The Avon Park Community Redevelopment Agency is inviting residents to three public workshops this month to help shape the future of local districts. The CRA wants community input on how to use funds for infrastructure, housing, beautification, and public spaces.
