Change is stirring inside Avon Park City Hall. After a narrow three-to-two vote, the council has appointed former Public Works Director Jason Atkinson as interim city manager, following Dr. Danielle Kelly’s resignation effective November 21st. Atkinson — now working in Fort Pierce — will begin November 24th, returning to City Hall where his previous tenure included a written reprimand and employee concerns, which he has publicly disputed. He steps in amid public concern over transparency and internal dealings, as the city prepares its search for a permanent manager next month.
A major chapter in Lake Placid’s history is closing as longtime Town Attorney Bert Harris III steps down after nearly 40 years of service. Harris, who helped guide the town through decades of growth and major achievements — including the new wastewater treatment plant and the Lake Placid Regional Plan — announced his decision during Monday’s Town Council meeting, saying, “I think it’s time.” Harris will remain in his role until a replacement is found and plans to continue practicing law locally.
Police are investigating a deadly stabbing that occurred Monday morning near the corner of Sharp Street and Bullard Avenue. According to Lake Wales Police Lieutenant Dale Hampton, an argument between two individuals turned violent, leaving one person fatally stabbed. Emergency crews attempted lifesaving measures, but the victim did not survive. A suspect, described as a Black male on a blue bicycle wearing black shorts, was apprehended later in the afternoon. Authorities continue their investigation and are asking anyone with surveillance footage or information to contact the Lake Wales Police Department.
A Polk County veteran is grateful for what he calls a big, awesome blessing. The Greater Bartow Chamber of Commerce announced yesterday Army vet Gregory Haitt will get a new roof for free from First Class Roofing. It comes while he recovers from open heart surgery and his wife deals with radiation treatments. Haitt tells Tampa Bay 28 he doesn’t have the money to fix the leaky roof, and this couldn’t have come at a better time.
