A Highlands County nonprofit formerly known as Hands for Homeless is celebrating its new name — Hands for Hope. The organization says the new name better reflects its expanded mission of helping anyone in need, not just those experiencing homelessness. The organization now provides food, showers, hygiene items, clothing and housing assistance. Hands for Hope is located on Robert Britt Street in Avon Park. For more information, call 863-453-5653.

Nu-Hope is moving its Sebring Thrift Store to a larger location on U.S. 27 South. The new store will be at 3660 U.S. 27, the former Royal’s Furniture location, just three-tenths of a mile from the current store. A grand opening is set for October first at 10 a.m. The expanded space will offer more secondhand merchandise, with proceeds supporting Nu-Hope’s services for older adults.

The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office is reminding local groups that crime prevention resources are available. Seniors vs. Crime representative John Bauer and Major Darin Hood recently gave a crime prevention presentation at Placid Temple Church of God in Lake Placid. Groups interested in hosting a presentation can call 863-402-7849.

A 22-year-old Auburndale man was apparently trying to start his day smelling fresh — but things went sideways on the Polk Parkway. Florida Highway Patrol says he was applying stick deodorant while driving Monday morning when he lost focus, hit a crash attenuator and ended up with his GMC Sierra balanced on top of a concrete median wall. No injuries were reported — and yes, troopers confirmed it was stick deodorant, not spray.
